Kolkata Knight Riders kick-started their IPL campaign on a positive note. They were quite sensational in every aspect of the game and as a result, they were able to get the better of Sunrisers Hyderabad. KKR won their opening rubber against SRH by 10 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

After winning the first game, the two-time IPL champions locked horns with Mumbai Indians in the second game. The match took place at the same venue. KKR captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and elected to bowl first. KKR bowlers maintained sheer discipline throughout the game and kept MI batsmen silent.

However, they couldn't control Suryakumar Yadav as he took his batting to the next level. The 30-year-old batsman continued his midas touch with the bat as he scored a wonderful half-century. While he was en route to converting his fifty into a big knock, he was dismissed by Shakib Al Hasan.

Suryakumar Yadav departed after scoring 56 off 36 balls with the help of 7 boundaries and 2 hits over the fence. MI captain Rohit Sharma also played well for his 43 off 32 balls including 3 fours and a six. In the end, MI managed to post 152 losing all the wickets in their quota of 20 overs.

Kolkata Knight Riders could have easily chased down the target but they ended up complicating themselves in the last 5 overs. Earlier, Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill stitched together a 72-run partnership but Rahul Chahar got rid of Gill for 33 in the 9th over. Since then, the spinner weaved the magic and dismissed Rahul Tripathi, KKR captain Eoin Morgan in the 11th and 13th over.

Despite losing three wickets, KKR still had a wood over MI because Nitish Rana scored a half-century. But Rana made a big blunder by stepping down the track off Chahar's bowling and was easily stumped out by Quinton de Kock in the 6th ball of the 15th over. After his departure, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell found it really tough to chase down the target as KKR lost the game by 10 runs.

After the game, KKR's co-owner Shah Rukh Khan reacted to the heart-breaking defeat as he wrote: "Disappointing performance to say the least. Apologies to all the fans!". Meanwhile, Andre Russell reacted to the KKR co-owner's tweet in the post-match press conference.

“Yeah, I support that Tweet but at the end of the day the game of cricket… you are not sure until it’s over. I think we are still confident, we still played some good cricket and I am proud of the boys. You know, we are definitely disappointed but it’s not the end of the world, it’s only the second game and we are going to learn from it. It was a bit difficult to hit at the end. The guys were bowling cutters, and they were bowling into the wicket. But at the end of the day, we are professionals. Not going to look for any excuses. We should have crossed the line tonight.”

“We know what we can do, and I know what I can do. Unfortunately good finishers like me and DK, we didn’t get bat to ball. If we had got a few boundaries, the game would have been over. We are going to go back to the drawing board. We have been playing some good cricket. It is just about moving from this game and going from strength to strength,” Russell who took 5/15 in 2 overs against MI added.
