The Indian cricket is at a different juncture now that it is witnessing a massive pool of talent. Ranji trophy tournament and IPL has gone on to give a new and much-needed platform to a plethora of players. Ruturaj Gaikwad has been one such player.
Moreover, this season of the IPL has seen brilliant and talented youngsters like usual. Avesh Khan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Venkatesh Iyer and Umran Malik have been the new founds of the IPL talent pool.
Similarly, IPL has given Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Yuzi Chahal, Surya Kumar Yadav and many such players to Indian cricket. But unfortunately, the Indian selectors have been still going on the name basis and not the form basis for selection.
Moreover, this was recently seen in the selection of the T20 World Cup 2021. The Indian selectors did not go with those who are in form but went with the big names. A lot of these players did not even deserve to be in the Indian squad.
Players like Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Surya Kumar Yadav and Varun Chakravarti were given call ups. These players were out of form and did not deserve the selection.
But players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Avesh Khan, Venkatesh Iyer who were buzzing in the second phase of the IPL were not given any chance. Moreover, Harshal Patel who was the leading wicket-taker in the IPL was shockingly not in the plans of the selectors.
And the result of it was there for everyone to see at the end of the T20 World Cup. The men in blue went on to play disastrously and they got knocked out of the tournament. Moreover, India could not even reach the knockout stages.
However, it is expected that the BCCI and the Indian selectors will go with form and not based on the name. Similarly, a lot of such changes are already taking place in Indian cricket.
Many youngsters have been chosen by the Indian selectors for the upcoming series against New Zealand. Similarly, Ruturaj Gaikwad has also gotten the chance to represent India against New Zealand.
However, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels that Ruturaj Gaikwad is a great find for India. Moreover, the 1983 World Cup winner also feels that the youngster can do well in all three formats of the game for India.
Sunil Gavaskar said, “I think he is a fabulous talent. He can serve India in all three formats in the time to come. He has got the range of shots and great shot selection.”
Gavaskar further added, “Ruturaj has got the technique and he has shown the temperament to deal with any kind of pressure. It’s an exciting time to see how he develops as an international cricketer.”
