Virat Kohli might quit ODI captaincy to focus on Tests and batting: Ravi Shastri

Virat Kohli made the headlines earlier when he decided to resign as T20I captain following India’s campaign at T20 World Cup 2021. India’s journey came to a close after they locked horns with Namibia.
After that, Virat Kohli’s tenure as T20I captain came to an end. Apart from that, Ravi Shastri’s tenure as India’s head coach also came to an end. Team India ran through a disappointing phase in the marquee event.
India lost to Pakistan and New Zealand in the first two games of the showpiece event. They managed to win a hat-trick of games against Afghanistan, Scotland and Namibia respectively.
Pakistan and New Zealand qualified for the semi-finals. New Zealand beat England by 5 wickets to reach the first semi-final while Pakistan lost to Australia in the second semi-final.
Australia will lock horns with New Zealand in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 final in Dubai. The final will take place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on November 14, Sunday.
Meanwhile, shocking news emerged from the Indian cricket camp. Ravi Shastri has dropped a big hint about Virat Kohli’s future as ODI captain. Shastri reckons Kohli might drop a bombshell in the upcoming days.
It seems that Virat Kohli’s interest in Test cricket could lead him to make big decisions in the coming days. The former head coach Ravi Shastri feels Kohli might quit ODI captaincy to focus on Test cricket and batting.
“In red-ball cricket, India has been the No1 team in the world for the last 5 years under Virat Kohli. So unless he wants to give up or if he is mentally fatigued and says he wants to focus on his batting.
Which can happen in the near future, don’t think it will happen immediately – but it can happen,” former Team India’s head coach Ravi Shastri told India Today.
As per Ravi Shastri, many legends of the game before him may want to focus on his batting at some point. “The same (quitting captaincy) might happen with the ODIs as well.
“He might say he wants to focus just on Test captaincy. It is his mind and body that will make that decision. He won’t be the first, there are many players in the past who have had very successful tenures and captains. But then, they gave it up to focus on batting,” Shastri speculated.
It’s been more than two years since Virat Kohli scored a century in international cricket. The 33-year-old cricketer is likely to end his century drought anytime soon
